Internal Sales (Technical Progression Pathway)

Reports To: Sales Manager

Location: Winsford (office based)

Role Purpose

This role offers an exciting opportunity for an ambitious and technically minded individual to begin their career in internal sales, with a clear development pathway into a Technical Sales position. This role would suit someone with an interest or experience in mechanical or electrical engineering. You will start by providing frontline customer support and managing inbound sales enquiries, developing strong product knowledge and customer relationship skills. Over time, with structured training and mentoring, you will progress to advising customers on technical product specifications, supporting the sales team with technical solutions, and eventually taking on full Technical Sales responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities – Initial Phase (Customer Service & Sales)

· Handle inbound customer enquiries via phone & email

· Provide quotations and follow ups to convert enquiries into orders.

· Resolve customer issues quickly and professionally.

· Identify upselling and cross-selling opportunities.

· Maintain accurate CRM records.

· Create stock codes, calculate pricing, and manage discount structures.

· Communicate delivery expectations and manage order fulfilment.

· Prepare marketing materials and assist with promotional activities.

· Take card payments and process customer returns in line with procedures.

· Build and maintain strong customer relationships through excellent service.

Development Phase – Training & Progression

During your first 12–24 months, you will receive full product, application, and industry training to enable a smooth transition into a more technical sales capacity. Training will include:

· Understanding gearbox, motor, and inverter technologies.

· Gaining familiarity with product selection tools and technical documentation.

· Developing application-based sales and solution design skills.

· Learning consultative and value-led sales techniques.

· Shadowing senior technical sales staff and participating in joint customer meetings.

Progression Role – Technical Sales (Target Position)

· Acting as the technical point of contact for customers.

· Advising on technical product specifications and suitable solutions.

· Preparing accurate and technically sound quotations and proposals.

· Using consultative sales techniques to negotiate profitable pricing structures.

· Supporting the wider sales team with technical input throughout the sales process.

· Following up quotations to convert to orders.

· Handling post-sales technical queries or product issues.

· Identifying and developing new business opportunities.

· Attending customer sites, exhibitions, and training events as required.

Candidate Profile

Essential Skills & Attributes

· Strong communication skills (written and verbal).

· Excellent telephone manner and confidence in customer interaction.

· Organised and able to prioritise workload effectively.

· Proactive with a positive attitude and ambition to grow.

· Strong IT skills (Microsoft Office)

· Interest or aptitude for technical products and applications.

· Desire to develop into a technical or engineering sales role.

· Full UK driving licence.

Desirable Skills & Experience (not essential)

· Understanding of electrical motors, gearboxes, or variable speed drives.

· Basic CAD competence (e.g., Solidworks).

· Previous experience in B2B product sales or a technical environment.

Could be considered an entry level position, for someone with a desire to step into sales. 

Alternatively, it would be interesting to hear of any candidates that perhaps have some basic mechanical engineering or electrical engineering knowledge that perhaps wish to change careers.   

Salary range will depend on their knowledge and experience. Entry level ~£23k pa but higher salaries will be considered in line with candidates’ knowledge and experience.
